Before you go

Traffic doesn’t pay the bills.
Conversions do.

Your setup tracks who came and from where. But knowing what they did — which pages led to sign-ups, which channels actually converted, which CTAs got clicked — requires conversion events. This is the cheapest moment to add them. The GTM container is already there. Adding conversions now costs $47 less than doing it as a separate job.

Clean setup, solid baseline

What exactly is a conversion event?

Right now, GA4 records that someone visited your site. It knows which page they landed on, how long they stayed, and roughly where they came from. That’s useful as a starting point.

But it can’t tell you what happened next — whether they filled out your contact form, clicked your booking link, signed up for your list, or bought something. Those actions don’t get recorded unless you specifically tell GA4 to watch for them. That’s what a conversion event is: a signal you define that says “this action matters.”

Without conversion events:

“500 people visited from Google this week.”

With conversion events:

“500 people visited from Google. 22 filled out the contact form. 8 booked a call. Instagram sent 200 visitors and zero converted.”

The second version tells you something you can act on. Stop spending time on Instagram, double down on Google. That’s the difference conversion tracking makes.

How does it actually work?

Google Tag Manager sits on your site and “listens” for things to happen — a button click, a form submission, a specific page loading. When it detects the action you’ve defined, it fires a signal to GA4. GA4 records it as a conversion. No code changes to your site. No developer required after the initial GTM snippet is installed.

What should your 5 events be?

Pick the actions that most directly connect to revenue or pipeline. One purchase or booked call is worth more than a hundred page views — your conversions should reflect that. Here’s what that typically looks like by business type:

Service businesses

Contact form submitted, booking confirmed, consultation requested, phone number clicked

E-commerce

Purchase completed, checkout started, add to cart, product page viewed

Coaches & consultants

Discovery call booked, application submitted, opt-in completed, pricing page visited

SaaS & content

Trial started, account created, email sign-up, key feature used, upgrade clicked

Local businesses

Directions clicked, call button tapped, appointment booked, hours page visited, review link clicked

Media & creators

Newsletter subscribed, lead magnet downloaded, membership started, sponsor link clicked, course enrolled

We’ll decide your 5 together — you know your business goals, I know what’s trackable.

Additional events can be added afterward. Most businesses find 3–5 covers the meaningful actions on their site.

When I’m already in your GTM container doing the Foundation setup, adding conversion events takes less time. Later, it requires a fresh engagement. The $47 discount reflects that efficiency.

Typically 2–3 business days from receiving your completed intake form, any required access, and final approval of the conversion events we’ll build together.

Completely fine. The Foundation gives you a clean, working setup. You can add conversion tracking anytime — it’ll just cost $297 as a standalone service.
